Tide Storms Back for a 40-17 Win Over the Bulls

Doug Segrest (Sports Reporter - Birmingham News)

These comments came during a post game interview with Birmingham News sports writer Doug Segrest ...

Home Games reporter ... What were your impressions of the day?

Doug Segrest - Birmingham News (11th season covering Alabama football)

I think what caught me the most was Mike Shula on the sideline, he was presidential. He looked like he belonged there; he looked like he had been there. The staff has come together very quickly. This is a team that stayed together through all kinds of things. Just the way they preformed today, you know, you’ve got to give them an “A”. I think it exceeded most reasonable expectations. This wasn’t a bad team to play.

What were your expectations of the day?

Sluggish, much like the first half. There is no guaranteed victory. I mean this is a South Florida team that won 9 games last year, could win the conference USA, which is not a bad conference. This is an Alabama team that does have talent, particularly front line talent, has a lot of talent. But it is hard to put a new offense in over the course of a season, much less over 3 weeks … and to score 40 points even with a little help from defense and special teams is a little unexpected.

What did you see that was good out there today?

The two minute offense. Then once they got the rhythm, they could pretty much do what they wanted to, they could run the ball, they could throw the ball. I thought the defense got caught a little back by South Florida’s speed. It never got in sync because of that no-huddle offense. But from midway through the second quarter, they dominated on defense, too.

And the bad? Do you care to venture there?

The offense certainly had some funks, I never thought Shaud Williams really got on track as a running back. He was almost on the verge of making the big game. Everything that I saw bad was just stuff that had room for improvement. So it was very encouraging performance, I think.

What did you think of Williams’ punt return? That was one of my favorite plays. It had some great blocking, I love to see that.

Great blocks, and he read the blocks. He just kind of glided along the sideline and just fooled them. I forget now who made the other blocks. For the two key blocks, he set up and that obviously was the spark. Had that not happened, you know, this may have been a close game, probably would have been a close game, not as high a score.

And finally about Oklahoma next week, obviously it is going to be ramped up a good bit regarding intensity and the skill level of the players. What are they going to have to do to match up?

The offense is going to have to be more like the second half than like the first half. And with the Oklahoma defense, that doesn’t guarantee anything, maybe a couple of touchdowns … lots of ball control. I expect next week to be just an old fashioned football game. If Alabama’s offense continues to evolve like it has there is a chance for an upset.

Any guys at Oklahoma that you are going to be watching?

White, the quarterback, you can just name about anybody you want to on defense, they are just that good, most of them have been there a few years and the speed is incredible.

And who are some of your favorite players nationally outside of Alabama?

I like Roy Williams from Texas. He is our (Birmingham News sports writers) Heisman trophy favorite. He’s a guy who probably would have gone top five in the NFL, but chose to come back. Eli Manning; he may be already off the radar after today. Frank Gore of Miami. And of course the best quarterback from Alabama, Phillip Rivers who’s at North Carolina State. I think he is the real deal.
