Alabama Pounds Out A 17-3 Victory

DeMeco Ryans (#35 So. SLB, 6-2 225 lbs. Bessemer - Jess Lanier)

These comments came following the Southern Mississippi game as DeMeco Ryans questions from the press pool ...

DeMeco Ryans – After losing three straight games, there’s no better feeling than this.

Press Pool - Defensively, what did you guys do to shut them down?

We studied real hard this week so we would know them well, front and back and all the way through. We made some good calls with certain personnel groupings and we executed. I think that’s what we did so well that we haven’t been doing in recent weeks. We got off the field on third down and made them punt the ball. We helped ourselves.

Special teams was also big.

Yeah, special teams did great today. You always want to win the battle of special teams because there’s a lot of field position there. I think we won that battle today, you know. We had a couple of blocked punts. It was great.

DeMeco, what is it about you and your position that you’re able to rack up so many tackles?

(smiles) Ahhh … I guess I’m just always doing my job. You do things right and I guess it will come to you. So I’m always doing my job, just trying to take care of my assignment. Everything else just falls in place.

What’s the most tackles you’ve ever had in a game, high school whatever. I know you had 25 against Georgia.

That’s the most I’ve ever had. 25 was a great feeling.

Do you take notice of the SEC and how many tackles other people have and how high you are in the rankings?

I really don’t look at it too much because it really doesn’t mean anything to be leading in tackles. It basically just shows that you’re on the field too long! (laughs) You don’t want to rack up that many, you want to get off the field and win the game.

How about that all-time mark? That would be pretty cool to be able to get that wouldn’t it?

Yeah, I think that would be a great feeling. Woodrow Lowe has the tackle record I think. It would be a great feeling to break the record.

What was the situation this year in terms of other people moving around at different positions?

Well, we lost Corn(elius Wortham) and Brooks (Daniels). Me and Juwan had to step up and be ready to play this year. We helped each other throughout the season and we’re going to keep helping each other as long as we’re here.

Now that you’re getting more and more reps, do you feel like you’re getting better at your current position?

Oh yeah. You go in on Sunday, watch the film’s and correct your mistakes and just build on it and get better. I feel like we’ve gotten a lot better since the first game.
