Alabama Pounds Out A 17-3 Victory

Joe Kines (Defensive Coordinator)

These comments came following the Southern Mississippi game as Coach Kines answered questions from the press pool ...

Coach Joe Kines Joe Kines – I think it’s the best week of preparation we’ve had all year. Sometimes you go out there and work hard with tackling drills and all that stuff, but your mind’s not in it and you don’t get much out of it. Game plan-wise they really bit into it all week. They really did a good job concentrating and really worked hard. It’s great when that yields production on Saturday.

Press Pool – Do you think your guys felt like they had a little more burden because of the quarterback situation?

No sir. We talked about “How can we win this game?” To win this game, we had to limit their offense and get turnovers. We’ve got to win the field position battle and we have to win it on the kicking game. Then offensively, anything that happens is a plus. They took it and did a great job running the ball. So it was one of those old timey games tonight.

It looked like Jeremy Clark came in and gave you some pretty good snaps at tackle.

I don’t watch just him, but I know he played well. The coaches were talking about how Charlie Peprah and Anthony Madison played well. David Scott played good coming off the bench. (Ahmad) Childress and (inaudible) played good inside. (Antwan) Odom and (Mark) Anderson both had a good ballgame. Those guys did well. I was thumbing through the stats and it looked like DeMeco Ryans hit the ball about 13 or 14 times and that’s pretty good for the limited number of plays they had.

Coach, talk about the 3-and-outs.

Right. That was big for us early in the game. We didn’t need them to have long drives. We needed to get off the field any way we could. A turnover is a way to get off the field, and 3-and-out is a way to get off the field, but just don’t give them field position. That’s what we tried to do today.

Is that the type of effort you like to see coming off the Georgia game?

It was really good. I tell you, effort hasn’t been a problem all year. The team effort is not the problem. But sometimes we’re our own worst enemy. This week, they’ve probably done the best job they’ve done all year really biting into the game plan. I really thought they knew what to do and how to do it. We got good results today.
