Too Many Tigers ... LSU Beats Bama 27-3

Dave Rader (Offensive Coordinator, quarterbacks coach)

These comments came following the 2003 LSU game as Coach Rader answered questions from the press pool ...

Coach Dave Rader ... Coach Dave Rader … It was apparently tonight that they have very good personnel. I think there were positions where they were better than I thought they were. They had some really good defensive personnel. We gave them 14 days to prepare for us and they had some good stuff. It took a while for us to figure it out. And that put us in the hole.

Do you think they’re the best defense you played all year?

Hard to say. We’ve seen so many good defenses this year … man. We’ll just leave it at that. They’re a really good defense. Good personnel. Good scheme. They had field position. We played from the minus territory for almost the whole first half. Against that defense, it’s costly.

The amount and type of blitzing they were doing … was it hard to find where that extra person was coming from?

No. They did a couple of things early on that we had to figure out. Once we figured it out, we had people for them. We knew they were going to blitz. There are only eleven of them out there. We just had to figure out which ones they were going to bring. The thing about is they had real good people rushing, blitzing and covering. They’re a real good team. Maybe they are the second best team we’ve played.

Did the way they shut down your running game force you into some things you didn’t want to do?

To attack LSU, we needed something to keep them from packing it in there. We were going to have to throw some things and we needed to get hot. But we didn’t get hot. That really hampered any type of momentum we were trying to generate. They have good people, a good scheme and they had field position.
