Alabama vs. LSU Game Day picture show

Too Many Tigers ... LSU Beats Bama 27-3

Joe Kines (Defensive Coordinator '03)

These comments came following the 2003 LSU game as Coach Kines answered questions from the press pool ...

Coach Joe Kines ... They’re not as flashy, but they may have more weapons than Oklahoma. They can run the ball extremely well and do a good job with their personnel groupings. And when they have to, they can throw it down the field. They have a lot of tools in their toolbox.

Press Pool … Is it going to be a problem to get this team up for next week?

I wouldn’t think so. Some things never change and next week is the week that brings out the best in both programs. We’ve just got to get over this one quick. That’s the thing about it. After you play, you’ve got about an hour to celebrate or an hour to cry. Tonight, you have to cry and just keep on going.

Can you talk about some of the numerous sophomores and freshmen you had playing tonight?

We’re getting baptized right now, and that’s fine. We’re taking our lumps, but we’re getting a tremendous amount of playing time for some guys that normally wouldn’t be in the mix. I couldn’t be more proud of how our sophomore and freshmen are playing. We’re going to get better. You just have to have a little faith and perseverance to hang through the tough times. It’s just a play or two from being where we are and being really good. When that comes, we can all enjoy it.

What are some of the things they’ve been learning throughout the year?

The one thing I noticed on tape is that we never quit. Sometimes we run out of gas a little bit. But this bunch has never backed down and when you call on them on the sideline, they respond. There’s going to be a day when that’s really important. So they’re learning how to do that and to play hard. We made some plays tonight, but we just didn’t make enough.

Derrick Pope laid a couple of big hits tonight. Talk about his play.

Yeah he did. Derrick plays hard every game. We missed him when he was out those couple of games. He’s back in there now though. He’s like a heavyweight boxer; he’s going to come from left field on you. He’s not a jab and puncher. He’ll try to knock you out of the box every single snap. He’s a joy to coach and be around. It kills him to lose. You don’t ever want to get used to losing. That’s the thing you like about this crowd is that they are fighting and clawing, and we’ll fight our way out of this.

One of your bright spots today was Charlie Peprah

He played a good game. LSU has thrown and caught the ball on everyone. We went into the game knowing that we couldn’t play one thing on them all night long. The three down linemen and the coverage package was great in the middle of the game. We got the interception and got them under control and off the field. But late in the game, they ran the ball on us. At that point in the game, it wasn’t X’s and O’s. We had just run out of gas. But we did get bowed up and stopped them there at the end. We never did quit fighting and you have to proud of them for that.
