These comments came following the 2003 LSU game as Brodie Croyle answered questions from the press pool ...

Press Pool … What’s this week going to be like preparing for Auburn?

Brodie Croyle … It’s the game we look forward to all year, every year. This is all we’ve heard about all year. We haven’t heard anything about us winning ten games last year. All we’ve heard about is getting beat by Auburn. Hopefully, we can go down there and beat those guys. And hopefully, nobody will say anything about our seven losses.

You took a lot of hits today.

We did take a pretty good beating. But my shoulder feels great, and I’m going to be sore in the morning no doubt about that. But they’re a good team and a good defense. You expect to get hit when you play that team.

I looked like a couple of times they had a guy running free at you.

They brought a couple of different games that we hadn’t seen on tape. And when they do that, you’re going to have a couple of guys come free. A few times they brought one more guy than we could take. But that’s part of football. We’ve had some rough ones this year, but hopefully it will pay off in the long run.

Talk about getting down 10-0 early in the game and being unable to sustain any offense or make first downs.

At the start of the year we had pretty much the same problem. We had bad field position pretty much the whole first half (of tonight). When you play a defense like we played tonight, that isn’t good. That’s one thing. Us not making plays or executing is another thing. And them showing up with a great game plan and playing great defense, that’s probably the main thing.

It seemed like you just couldn’t move the ball tonight. You got across the 50-yard line in the first half just once.

You’ve got to give them a lot of credit, no doubt. They’re a good football team and they’ve got a great defense. At the same time, we’ve got to find a way to move the ball. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing. There’s really no other way to put it. We didn’t run the ball well. We didn’t throw the ball well. I’ve got to play better, everyone has to play better.

Do you think they wanted it more?

I don’t think that’s ever going to be the case. I don’t think anyone is ever going to want it more than we do. We’re at that point where we have to find ways to make plays in big games. We were just too late tonight.

Was it important to get those three points and not get shut out?

You don’t ever want to get shut out. We could have gone for it or done some trick play. Next week, we might come down to that same position with the game on the line and Brian has to make that big kick for us. I’m sure that had something to do with it to get him some confidence going into the Auburn game.

Can you talk about Tyrone Prothro a little bit and what you’ve seen out of him?

He’s getting better and better every week. He’s one of those exciting guys. Seems like every time he got the ball tonight, he made a big play. So we have to find a way to get him the ball more often.

Where y’all expecting that out of him all season?

Oh yeah. From the first day of two-a-days we knew he was going to be a special player. He hasn’t let anybody down yet.

As the game went on, it looked like you were moving around in the pocket a little bit and doing some scrambling.

Well, they’re too fast to try and run outside on them. I did start looking for ways to run and if I saw someone open I’d just flick it to them. It’s just one of those things you make adjustments with.

Talk about the Auburn game a little bit. What do you do to get this team ready after coming off a hard loss?

Two years ago, we beat them. Then last year we got beat by an Auburn team that wasn’t supposed to beat us. So hopefully this year will be the opposite. We’re going to be prepared and we’re going to play hard. It’s Alabama/Auburn. There’s really nothing else to say.
