Auburn Breaks The Tide 28-23
Joe Kines (Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers Coach)

Coach Kines says he's looking forward to another shot at the Tigers next year
These comments came following the 2003 Auburn game as Coach Kines answered questions from the press pool ...
Press Pool … Is Carnell Williams the best back you’ve faced this year?
Coach Joe Kines … He’s in that crowd. Who knows? Anytime you have three or four of them of that caliber, it just depends on what night it is.
Were there adjustments made at halftime?
I thought the guys really did a nice job after the half. Really, all we did was settle back into the game plan. We knew what was going to happen. The kids knew what to expect. We just didn’t play good early. In that atmosphere being so young, we got back on our heels a little bit. Once we settled down and played, we did OK. We fought back and gave ourselves a chance. But then it got away from us right there at the end.
You looking forward to getting another chance at them next year?
Yes sir. That’s why this game is so great, is that there will always be another year.
What did you tell the team after that first play, when Carnell broke loose for the touchdown?
Same thing you tell them every time. You’ve got to wrap him up and you’ve got to make the tackle. We’ve seen that play a thousand times. Lead Draw Strong … that’s a base play against a loaded up front, but the guy made a play.
How big was that third-a-19 in the first half?
It was big. They all get big as it goes along. The play before, we put ourselves in a good situation. Then came back and missed a tackle on the sack. Once he scrambled out of that. He put the coverage in a bind and made a good throw on the sideline. The kids caught it and got the first down.
Coach Shula said that the team is a bit tired of ‘character building’. Can you expound on that a little bit?
This season has been a season of one or two plays. With a short hand and a
short deck, those guys have played extremely hard. We just need to keep working
and get ourselves in position to having a full deck. Then we can evaluate this
program. Recruiting is of the essence right now, and this is going to be a great
recruiting staff. Guys can see that there’s an opportunity to play here
and play real quick. There’s some good players in the state that we’re
close on. We just need to push that over the top and then we’re off and
running.
