Bull Slough Residents Face Long Detours
The historic bridge at Bull Slough can be seen on the right

About a 100 residents in the Bull Slough area will continue to face major detours for at least another year.

The historic, one-lane bridge that provided the only direct access to the community was damaged in May after a truck driver got a backhoe he was hauling tangled in the superstructure. The bridge has been closed since then, forcing residents to drive as many as 20 extra miles on backroads.
State officials say they won’t help pay for a new bridge, unless the 120-year-old structure is somehow preserved. However, the state has also refused to provide funding to help dis-assemble the bridge. A new, two-lane bridge is expected to cost about $1 million.

Local officials have talked about moving the bridge to Kentuck Park in Northport to use for foot traffic. They are now searching for the funds to make the move possible.

The old Bull Slough bridge lies in north Tuscaloosa County and spans part of a backwater at Lake Tuscaloosa.
