Blue Curls, or Bastard Pennyroyal, (Trichostema dichotomum or Trichostema setaceum) grows to between 2 and 3 feet tall and is sometimes found in dry fields and pinelands. The plant was growing in partial/full sun near the edge of some woods.

Ironweed (Verbena noveboracensis) is commonly seen along roadsides and ditches across Tuscaloosa County. It grows up to 7 feet tall with clusters of tiny, dark purple flowers. Blooms July-September.

Butterfly Pea (Clitora mariana) is a wide ranging wildflower that is found from Florida to New York. Commonly found in dry open woods, thickets and roadsides. This plant is growing in partial/full shade on a wooded ridge overlooking Lake Tuscaloosa. Blooms June-August.

It's likely you've seen Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum incanum) growing along many a roadside in Tuscaloosa. This plant is widespread and easily identifiable by the "frosted" look to its tips. Thought to be called Mountain Mint because the whitish leaves look like they're covered in snow. Blooms June-August.

Regarded more as a weed than a wild flower, Common Goldenrod (Solidago altissima) seems to grow anywhere there's sun. Commonly seen along unmowed fields, roadsides and ditches. Blooms through October.

Jewel Weed (Impatiens capensis) is a favored nectar plant among hummingbirds. Grows in colorful thickets up to 6 feet tall. Found in wet woods and along stream banks This plant is in the "Touch-Me-Not" family. It's seed capsules burst open when touched. Blooms May-October.

Rosinweed (Asteraceae) blooms between June and September. It's hard to distinguish from sunflower species. One noticeable difference is rosinweed forms seeds in a ring around the disc. Sunflowers form seeds inside the entire disc. Rosinweed grows up to 4' tall. Usually found in average to dry light woods and clearings.

Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana) is also known as False Dragonhead. This plant is very aggressive and spreads quickly. It's beautiful to see ... unless it invades your flowerbeds! Blooms August-November.
