MUSIC REVIEW - The Woggles ... (garage rock from Athens, GA)

No doubt these guys can tear it up anywhere on this or any other planet. Newfound garage superstars The Hives better make their money quick. It's just a matter of luck that The Professor and the Boys haven't stolen their thunder.

The Woggles have caused butts to be shook and feet to be stomped from Tuscaloosa, to England, to Japan. The Woggles may be drinking saki one week, and playing for free beer back in the States the next. Leave the babies at home. Garage inspired smackdowns are likely to be handed out.

That's what happened late June in downtown Tuscaloosa, as the Woggles returned to the legendary Chukker for the first time since it reopened. As Model Citizen took good care of opening duties, pulling a healthy crowd to fill the bar's narrow stagefront. The perfect setup for the full knockdown, delivered by the Woggles.

The ranks of the stagefront swelled in size as The Woggles began ripping through some of their library of original tunes, including crowd favorite "Ramadan Romance." The band's globe-trotting experience shone through as they toyed and teased the crowd. It was like putty in the Professor's sweaty hands. More than once, band members (except for Dan Electro) jumped off stage and walked through the swarm of people to help them do the Swim, the Montague, and in general, get that boogie on.

It was a rock-n-roll show in pure form. The riffs and beats carried grooves danceable for even the most self-conscious double left-footer in the building. The energy was high song after song after song, never giving the chance to lose interest. The music was confident and skillful, but crowd interaction made the show.

The Woggles are a must see. Catch them in the States, or late October/early November 2002 in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland.
