Hazard County Girls from New Orleans play Tuscaloosa's music scene

The Hazard County Girls ain't got nothin' to do with the General Lee or Daisy Dukes, and everything to do with music of chance, risk and peril. This rock trio started on the New Orleans entertainment scene and has been rounding the Deep South music circuit, landing big gigs with the talented likes of Dick Dale and Dead Moon. The Hazard County Girls (Sharon Heather/Drums, Christy Kane/Vocals/Guitar, Jennifer K./Bass.) have played in a lot of Southeastern bars, and have recently started to include Tuscaloosa on their touring path. The band sat down at their computer recently for a chat with one of DCO's music hounds ...

Druid City Online - How long have the Hazard County Girls been together?

Hazard County Girls - Almost 2 years.

Why did you get together?

Sharon and I met and decided to jam together and there was immediate chemistry so we decided to start a band.

Let's have some HCG history ... talk about some of your past band experiences.

Christy: I played in a punk band in NYC called Sorry.
Sharon: This is my first band.
Jen has played guitar in a few New Orleans bands, this is her first time as bass player.

Where did you play the last time you were in Tuscaloosa, and what happened?

Last time we played Tuscaloosa it was at the Back Porch with Leader Dog. Everyone there was
super nice, and the fellas in Leader Dog were very helpful and cool. It wasn't too crowded for our set but the folks there were into it, we actually sold some merchendise. Several of the people there told us we were the first all girl band they'd seen in a long time. We're excited to play Tuscaloosa again, and see what kind of crowd the Chukker gets (on the 25th).

Compare Ttown to other cities you play around the Southeast.

Let's see, so far all places we've played in the Southeast, they've all been very different. But whether it's been Tuscaloosa, or Athens we've had fun and met very nice people. We will say Tuscaloosa gave us the biggest bar tab of any other place in the S.E.

Do people react differently to you as a "girl band."

We've been treated really well, in general people who don't know what to expect are really surprised that we all play so hard. But we do notice people (especially fellas) offer to help move our equipment, feed us, and give us a place to crash more readily than some of our male friends in bands have experienced.

Where were your last three shows, and where are your next three?

As of our show (on January 25th, 2003) at the Chukker, our last three will have been at Star Bar in Atlanta, The Velvet Lounge in Savannah, and Caledonia Lounge in Athens. Our next three will be February 7th and 14th in New Orleans and tentatively at the Handle Bar in Pensacola on February 15.

Who are some of your favorite bands that you've played with or seen in the past 3-4 months?

We played with Dead Moon in October which was amazing, Dick Dale in November, which was really an honor. Locally we've gone to see some great shows. We've see Suplecs, the New Orleans Kings of Rock, Mexico 1910 a super talented New Orleans instrumental band. Rock City
Morgue, Deadboy and the Elephant Men, and Shelton Williams aka Hank 3 and his band Assjack.

What bands would play with the Hazard County Girls on your dream tour?

This is a hard one, because all of us will have very different answers. Sharon would love to play with Black Sabbath, while Jen would want to tour Argentina with Los Natas, Christy would choose opening for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. We all agree on the back from the
grave tours. If either Kurt Cobain or Jeffrey Lee Pierce were still alive, we'd love to tour with
with Nirvana, or the Gun Club.

If you could appear as a guest on a late night talk/entertainment show (Conon O'Brian, SNL ...) what would it be and why?

We'd play any of those any ol' time if we were ever asked to. Those shows are a great way for bands to be seen by people who may not other wise even know they exist. IF....and I stress IF we could pick ... let's see, Jen would pick Craig Kilborn to what it is he whispers to all the guests when they come out. Sharon would pick SNL on the off chance David Lee Roth might be there. I'd pick Conan, because he's Irish and he's the only guy who religiously invites Scott Thompson back and Kids in the Hall makes me laugh even when I'm not watching it.

Do you have music out right now? What is it and where do you record it?

We just finished our first full length record. It will be ready in March. We'll sell it on line and at our shows. We recorded here in New Orleans at The Truck Farm Studio. It's some of the people from the old Kingsway studio that shut down awhile back. It's a wonderful place to record! We had Daniel Rey (Misfits, Ramones) come and produce it. We're really happy with it. We're also on a Shut Eye Records compilation called Buzzlighter.

Best and worst thing about playing out of town gigs?

The best part is traveling and getting to play to new people. The worst part is missing our peeps at home, and our doggies.

What's the one thing people need to know about the Hazard County Girls?

That we have nothing what so ever to do with two cousins and a dame in short shorts. We chose the word Hazard for it's meaning in the dictionary. Although if Uncle Jesse or Boss Hog wanted to sell our Merch. we'd be ok with that!

What three words best describe what you want the HCG sound to be?

Monster Truck Loud.
