Turns Back Tulane 20-6 This post game transcript is the comments of Corey Reamer following the Tulane game : Press Pool … *question inaudible* asking about whether Javier Arenas was getting tired playing defense and returning punts … Corey Reamer … I’m sure he was. After 8 plays, he was in there for every single one of them and we’re going back to back series. He going to get tired, but that didn’t stop him. He was still out there competing as hard as he could. Good game for you tonight. You had a sack and a TFL (tackle for loss). Talk about your performance personally. Reamer ... If you just play the defense that the coaches have schemed up then you’re going to be able to make plays. That’s just what happened with us. Not everyone did their assignments and I just happened to be the one that got to make the plays. Coach Saban talked about how you guys ended up in base defense for most of the night … a lot more base defense than you’re used to playing. Talk about how they (Tulane) kept you on the field. We knew that was going to be their main package they were going to come after us with … with their “silver” and “regular”. We knew that regular was going to be on the field a lot more than it was last week. I think I only had like 10 snaps last week (vs. Clemson). We prepared for that all week and it kept me on the field for the most part. They didn’t come out and spread the field too much and kept two tight ends or two running backs in. Talk about the way you played in the red zone tonight. Saban thought it was one of the keys to the game by keeping them out of the end zone. It was. You know, we gave up some big plays and we had to stop them close to the goal line, but that’s what the defense is there for. You’ve got to bow your neck and make key stops, which was huge. Then they missed the field goals, which really helped us out too. You guys haven’t given up a touchdown in two weeks. How does that feel? That’s the goal right? That’s the goal of the defense. You just have to keep doing it every week. We were prepared and came out and knew what they were going to do. We executed the defense pretty well, except for a few mistakes. If you do that, this defense is designed to keep you out of the endzone so that was big for us. Do you think there was a hangover from the Clemson win? Not really. We just had some executions that we should have made but we didn’t. Had too many mistakes mentally and we just have to learn from it and realize that every team is going to bring their best every week. That’s what you have to expect, especially after a big win like Clemson. You knew they (Tulane) were going to be ready for us. I don’t think they played last week, so they had extra time to prepare for us. But you’ve got to expect that every day when you’re a good team. Talk about the defense effort tonight, you may have already mentioned something about it … We just had to step up. We weren’t clicking as well as we were last week on offense. You’ve got to expect that sometimes so we just had to be there when our number was called. And I think that’s what we did. We made the plays we needed to make to keep them out of the endzone. How big was that sack late in the game? Yeah, that was big (big smile). They were driving. I just got lucky and came free and made the play. He didn’t get the ball off as fast as he usually had been. He got it out of there pretty quick early in the game. But he held it long enough for me to get there. It seemed like last year you played down to the level of your competition. Did it feel like that at times … when you go out and destroy Clemson, but against Tulane you struggled? You can’t take anything away from Tulane. They’re a great team. They came out and executed real well and had an extra week to prepare for us. But we can’t use that as an excuse. We have to play like we’re capable of playing every week. We’ve got to be able to dominate and set the identity for the team. We’ve got to play like we’re capable of playing on every play. You have to feel proud that at least they were four times in the red zone and only came away with two field goals. Yeah, it’s what the defense is supposed to do. We bowed our necks when we needed to and they missed some field goals, so that was good for us. They made some big plays. We made some mistakes and could have gotten off the field earlier and prevented us from being in that circumstance. But that’s what we have to do is bow our necks when they get close to the endzone.
