Coach Torbush says his defense is beginning to Understand
Carl Torbush (Def. Co-ord./LBs Coach - prev. HC@UNC 98-20, HC@LBC 88-97)
Your guys really lived up to being the 10th ranked rushing defense in the nation tonight.
They really played well. I don’t like to talk much about it until the end of the season, but at this point I feel like we should be very confident in what we’re doing. We have gotten better. What we’ve got to do is realize that next week starts the SEC season, so it’s time to pick it up another notch because we’ve got a tough road to hoe.
Did some of the pass pressure you were getting come because of your ability to stop the run?
I don’t know what the stats are, but I feel sure they had a lot of second and long. Once they got to second and long, that put them behind the 8-ball instead of us. We felt like if they got into 2nd and 5 situations, then it was going to be tough because their bootleg and play-action pass would be more effective. They didn’t run many bootlegs because the situation didn’t call for it and the reason that happened is because we were effective on first down.
Was it schemes or personnel?
Oh, I wish I could say it was all schemes and coaching. But our guys, I don’t care what scheme you put them in, they’d be effective. I think what we’ve got that everyone is proud of is a very smart defensive football team. They understand what we’re doing. They understand why we’re doing it. They understand how to make adjustments. They understand that if there’s problem with a call, they can change it on the field. They couldn’t do that last year. I’m really amazed at the progress Charlie Jones has made. The whole secondary for that matter. Our linebackers are getting better. The guys up front are probably as intelligent a football group as I’ve been around because of their ability to adjust and talk and give us information to give the best chance of being successful.
