Coach Torbush defense is one of the best in the nation
These comments came during postgame media interviews ...
Torbush - I think we have enough depth to where if someone
does get hurt we can move on. I don’t want that to happen, but it’s
what separates the good teams from the great teams.
Reporter-Talk about that 4th and goal from the 2 yard line. If they score on that play, they’re still in it.
That game wasn’t out of hand until it got to 35. I mean, when they were within 3 touchdowns … I mean, if they make that play on 4th down and another later play on 4th down, that game is a dogfight. That score is a lot different than that ball game looked. It really was a tight ball game. If we don’t make those plays it’s a 14-point game and who knows what could happen from there.
How important was it that you kept them one-dimensional?
I say that every week, and you’ll hear me say it all year long. When you keep a team one dimensional, then your chance of winning goes up big time. It probably goes up 70 percent. We didn’t do that against Georgia. They kept us behind the 8-ball with second and five, second and six … so that on second down they could do what every they wanted to. With us making plays on first down, it helped keep them in 3rd and long.
Did you put in something new in the off week?
We did a couple of things we have not shown this year, and mixed that up. I think it helped us early. Later, they figured out what we were doing and popped us a couple of times. You better be able to do a little different against Manning, because if he figures out what you’re in, you’ve got yourself some problems. And I’ve known David Cutcliff since we were both graduate assistants. I know he does a great job of dissecting a defense. And if he can figure out where you’re going to be, you’ve got yourself some problems because he has guys that can make it work.
Playing Ole Miss’ offense … is it helpful in preparing for Tennessee. They have some similarities.
There are some similarities, but I think there have been more
similarities in the past. This year I see more separation. I think the longer
Cutcliff and (TN coach Phil) Fulmer spend apart, the more separation you’re
going to see. The running games are very, very similar. But once they spread
the field out they do begin to change it up.
