Les Koenning (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach)
Coach Koenning says Alabama's wide receiver played well
against the Ole Miss defensive backs

These comments came during postgame media interviews ...

Reporter-It seems that Santonio runs harder when he’s in the I formation, or it seemed that way to me. I was wondering if it was personnel or Ole Miss.

Koenning-We try to put our personnel in the best position to make plays. You know, we used (Greg) McLain in some blocking situations and it helped us. It also helped with the play action too.

Does having an off week give you more time to put something like that in?

Well, we’ve always had it in. The best that happened to us in the off week was we got back down to basics. We got back to fundamentals – blocking, protecting, throwing, catching – and it all stems from that.

A couple of the lineman told me that Ole Miss’ defensive line reacts a lot the same way as Georgia does.

Yeah, but they probably weren’t as big as Georgia though. Georgia is pretty big up front, but they moved around really well.

So what do you do? Do you line up in the I and just power football right at them?

Well, when you look at it, Georgia is a bit bigger than Ole Miss is. But you’ve got to give credit to the team that you play. They played well against us two weeks ago. This week Ole Miss got after us and did a pretty good job too. We just made some plays, and the rest is all about getting into the endzone.

It seemed you had that deep out route going a couple of times. Were you doing something to set that up, or is that just what they gave you?

Well, the way they were playing their coverage allowed us, if you can complete it, to take advantage of that.

Can you specify a little on what coverage that was?

They were playing some Robber coverage, what we call Robber coverage. And they were doing a good job playing inside leverage on our receivers so we were working some more out routes and our receivers did a nice job.

Tennessee is coming up. Have you talked about that yet, or will you let today sink in a little?

We’re going to let this sink in for about five or six hours, and then we’re going to get ready to get involved with those Vols.
