DC Joe Kines has deep SEC football roots. He says he's excited about his
players.
Joe Kines (Alabama Def. Coordinator./Linebackers Coach ... LB coach Florida State '00-'02, Def Co-ord. Georgia '95-'98 ...)
These comments came during post game interviews with Alabama Crimson Tide players and coaches ...
Coach Kines - We wanted to get out there and get some game situations today. We were talking to them the whole time today about the clock, and "This is what you do in this situation." We've had drills and we've had practice, but there's nothing like the game where you're actually going against the scoreboard and the whole nine yards. Again, everything right now is a teaching situation. The four minute deal right before the half, we told them "If you get the ball back right here, it's points." We just tried to get them in as many situations today that they'll be in next August.
How do you feel they've picked up your defense so far?
Very good. Very good. We've got the base part in, and when we come back in the Fall, we're not going to spend three or four days learning each other. We've already went through that and it was a struggle .. like running through mud. But once we got our feet under us, we started to make improvements.
Was that pretty much your starting defense, the guys that started today?
Yes sir! We're pretty good with the group we had out there, and there's about five or six guys on that second unit that if we'd played today, they would have played as much as the first group. So we're closing in on that depth thing.
With all your SEC experience, how did today stack up to other teams?
Well, Spring games are Spring games. It's almost like every year you leave and you wish you could have gotten more done, and wished you could've improved more. I bet if you talked to every coach in the conference right now, we'd all be on about the same page. Spring is Spring. But what's nice is to watch the good players begin to realize they can't afford to go backwards.
When you talk about game situations and all that, how do you think your guys handled it?
There wasn't but about three or four (situations) that came up, but I thought it was really good. The turnover on the first play of the game ... everybody's fresh and going real hard and to make the play ... if you go out and get a turnover right there, that's points. The turnover the White team got that put the Red team in a situation .... we needed to feel that, like we had to bow up a little bit. We needed to feel that, Obviously, the competition is not what it's going to be in August, but that's OK. The fact that we got them stopped and got off the field, we were able to say, "That's good, that saves points and this is how you handle that."
