The farming tradition continues with Community Supported Agriculture
at historic Northfolk Farm and Ranch on Bull Slough Road in north Tuscaloosa County.

Historic Northfork Farm and Ranch CSA has ties to Alabama's pre-civil war days as it was once part of the Prewitt Plantation. The current farmhouse was built in 1919 and moved to its present location in 1980. Another house on the property was built in 1942 by the parents of Northfork CSA owner and operator "Wood" Wilson. Wilson says as a child, his family used this land to farm all their food. He calls this year's CSA project a way of getting back to his roots by providing food for area households, but on a larger scale. Northfork CSA expects its first harvest of greens, radishes, and lettuce by early May. The next harvest of sweet corn, potatoes and some other vegetables should come later in May. Then by June, summer vegetables like tomatoes and peppers will begin to arrive in abundance. Other food items, like eggs, are also available. All products are raised organically in accordance with CSA standards. Once harvests begin to arrive, deliveries will be made to in-town members once a week, or pick-ups can be made at Northfork. Wilson says recent rains have made the ground too wet to plant yet, but he doesn't expect any delays. He also says they surpassed their first year membership goal. Wilson says "We would have accepted more. The only reason we didn't is we didn't want to bite off more than we could chew. We want to make sure we satisfy the members we already have in our first year." The strong level of interest has created the potential for a sign-up list for the summer harvest. Currently, there is one other operating CSA in west Tuscaloosa County at Snow's Bend Farm, which opened four years ago.

The official Northfork CSA website is under construction and should be online soon ... for more information about the Northfork Farm and Ranch CSA ... call 205-242-7707.
